Amazon has recently started selling its Kindle online across Brazil. This specific product launch has a significance to the company as it will finally be selling to the part of the world where it takes its name from - the Amazon.
This marks the first time Amazon has extended from e-books into retail in Latin America`s largest market. The online company will now have to negotiate Brazil`s very difficult logistical problems.
Speaking to Reuters Alex Szapiro, who has been hired to handle Amazon`s operations across Brazil, said:
"From north to south, from east to west, we are going to be delivering products across Brazil."
Szapiro said that e-book sales accounted for three per cent of all Brazilian book sales.
This development offers a huge opportunity for the company, with an increasingly rich population of over 200m, Brazil is well put to provide growth in the online market place.
Brazilians spent as much as £7.5bn last year - a 25 per cent increase on 2012, according to market research company eBit.
